We have three common interests at Sky Devil Wines: love of history and country; passion for excellent, terroir-inspired wine; and a desire to serve others chasing their dreams. Sky Devil Wines, a veteran-owned winery established in December 2017, honors and pursues this love of country, wine, and service.
History
Our founders are connected through Marine Corps Aviation. Jeff’s grandfather was a Marine in WWII who served with VMF-311, a Marine F4-U Corsair squadron stationed in the South Pacific. Matt is a third generation Naval Aviator who served as a Marine AV-8B Harrier attack pilot with VMA-542 and VMA-231 during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. Because of this connection to Marine Aviation, the company was branded Sky Devil Wines.
Since WWI, Marines have proudly referred to themselves as Devil Dogs. In time, some Marine pilots began using the term Sky Devil to describe a Devil Dog with wings. The F4-U Corsair, a legendary gull winged fighter plane of WWII, is an iconic and enduring symbol of Sky Devils around the world and is the symbol of our winery.
We are building the Sky Devil brand to exhibit our namesake’s esprit de corps and to embody the heroic ideals of a high performing team focused on mission accomplishment. Relentless perseverance is foundational to the Sky Devil, and Sky Devil Wines pursues its passion and mission in the same way. Every day.
Passion
We are passionate about all aspects of producing Sky Devil wine and we want to share our wine with family and friends while discussing things that matter. In fact, we contend the most important things are frequently discussed around the dinner table - as opposed to the boardroom table - and that the best conversations naturally develop during the course of a great meal accompanied by excellent wine.
Our 2016 inaugural vintage displays powerful tannins, structured balance, and layered complexity. It thoroughly expresses the 1,800’ sense of place from which it comes and is truly representative of the region. To a certain extent, our grapes are “grown in the sky.” And in the sky is exactly where a Sky Devil belongs.
Mission
The Sky Devil mission is to honor our heritage; passionately pursue work that matters; accept excellence alone; and forward the dream to motivated veterans pursuing something of their own.
We contribute a significant portion of Sky Devil’s sales to veterans and veteran-specific causes. Providing scholarships to veterans attending business school, we also offer pro-bono consulting services to veterans working to establish their own businesses. As the Sky Devil brand grows, our capacity to give will grow.
More generally, Sky Devil Wines seeks to inspire people to strive for something great and to reach for what feels like the impossible. We want people to work hard and to feel confident in taking calculated risks. In taking this approach ourselves, we've found that NOTHING is impossible.
